From June 3-8, the CRC’s COMFISH team in Senegal, Africa, with Professor Daniel Pauly and others from the University of British Columbia and The Sea Around Us project will host a national workshop on fish stock assessment. Experts from other West African countries will also participate with the support of World Wildlife Federation.
The purpose of the workshop is to launch and train Senagalese and West African fisheries experts in the use of a newly developed version of a popular fish stock assessment software (ELEFAN). It will be applied to key species, such as sardinella, which accounts for some 75 percent of all pelagic landings in Senegal and is the most important source of animal protein in the country.
At the same time, findings from a ground-breaking study on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in Senegal will be discussed.
