Regional Capacity Building in the Western Indian Ocean Region

One of the focal areas of CRC’s work in East Africa is capacity building, working to increase the numbers of trained and experienced coastal practitioners in the Western Indian Ocean region. The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) has been the major partner in this endeavor. Assistance from CRC helped WIOMSA emerge as the major indigenous African group that is actively working to create a new generation of coastal managers. With sponsorship from USAID/REDSO, CRC and WIOMSA organized a series of training workshops between 1997-2002. The partners also conducted a needs assessment for coastal management capacity building in the Western Indian Ocean Region.
