Conserving Critical Coastal Ecosystems in Mexico

As part of its Mexico program, the Coastal Resources Center worked with its partners to establish a Coastal Resources Management Program within the University of Quintana Roo’s (UQROO) Integrated Natural Resources Management Center and to establish a geographic information systems (GIS) Center as well. Priorities for this new UQROO Coastal Resources Management Program included promoting community based resource management, identifying and increasing the use of good practices for promoting tourism development compatable with the environment, establishing norms and policies for conservation and sustainable resource in marine parks, developing environmental plans, working to improve the enabling conditions for applying and implementing these policies and plans and increasing the organizational and professional capacity of NGOs, government and the academic sector in Quintana Roo to implement, replicate and sustain coastal management actions.
