A Capstone Course Field Trip

CRC Provides Students with Real-Life Lessons in Coastal Resiliency: CRC staff – Teresa Crean and Chris Condit – took University of Rhode Island students on a road trip to Providence in early 2017 to introduce the group to coastal sites in the state’s urban capital — from the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier, to Waterplace Park, to the Downtown area and a portion of the Woonasquatucket River — facing flooding challenges posed by strong storms and sea level rise. Students from a variety of URI schools and disciplines – ocean engineering, resource economics, marine affairs, and landscape architecture – are participants in the Integrated Coastal Resilience Capstone Studio, a Rhode Island Sea Grant and CRC education program. Speakers on the tour included Barnaby Evans, creator of Providence Waterfire; Kevin Kugel and Vlad Ibarra, City of Providence Emergency Management staffers; and Pam Rubinoff, of CRC’s coastal resilience team.
