The objective of the Sri Lankan Coastal Zone Management Project (CZMP, ended June 1999) was to assist in the preparation of a Coastal Zone Management Plan for Sri Lanka consistent with the National Coast Conservation Department (CCD) mandate, as well as to develop techniques for effectively implementing the CZMP. Project goals were:
1) To enhance local planning expertise in managing the coastal zone for sustainable use;
2) To increase the awareness among the Sri Lankan population of the value of coastal resources and the need to manage them;
3) To assist the CCD as it expanded the scope and detail of its management effort.
