Kenya Coastal Management Initiative

The Kenya Coastal Management Initiative was carried out in two phases between 1998-2003. The project’s original goal was to demonstrate how to formulate and implement effective, participatory and sustainable strategies for addressing representative coastal management issues. The project attempted to achieve this goal by: working in pilot sites to tangibly demonstrate the process and benefits of Integrated Coastal Management (ICM); moving from planning to implementation in a relatively short time frame; and building inter-sectoral teams that can sustain ICM efforts.
