Better Management of MPAs through Capacity Building: Indonesia and Philippines

Do you know if your marine protected area (MPA) is achieving its goals and objectives? Do you have monitoring information to better understand the management issues and adapt your strategy?

CRC partnered with long-term counterparts in Indonesia and the Philippines to test a monitoring and evaluation method (project ended  April 2007). This activity helped to strengthen the established provincial coastal management offices in pilot sites. The goal was for the provinces to provide technical services to individual MPA sites as well as understand the larger network of MPAs in the province.

This NOAA-funded project allowed for pilot testing of the guidebook in four community-based MPA sites. The assessment combined biophysical, socio-economic and governance indicators to get a comprehensive understanding of how effective the management was at each site and across a province.
