Kenya Coastal Management Initiative

Nyali-Bamburi-Shanzu Area Coastal Management Effort

Since 1994, CRC’s work in Kenya has supported and provided technical assistance to the Nyali-Bamburi-Shanzu area coastal management effort, while building the foundation for a broader-based, national program. The multi-agency Kenya Coastal Management Steering Committee Secretariat, housed at the Coast Development Authority (CDA), is CRC’s primary partner for local level activities. The National Environment Secretariat is the main national level partner. The first phase of work in Kenya was able to accomplish the following:

–  Continued publication of the Kenya Coast Newsletter and the E-Kenyacoast E-mail Discussion Group. (Led by the Coast Development Authority.)

–  A series of fact sheets on coastal management was introduced, with topics including environmental impact assessments and water quality. (Led by the Coast Development Authority.)

–  Improvements for water catchments were made at the Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach. (Led by the Coast Development Authority.)

– The Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach Association was organizationally strengthened. As a first joint effort, this group conducted a coordinated beach clean up. (Led by Pact Kenya.)

– A study tour and informational workshop was conducted for directors of the sectoral agencies involved with coastal management. (Led by the National Environmental Secretariat/Marine Desk.)

– A report outlining the present legal framework of coastal management in Kenya was produced. (Led by the African Centre for Technology Studies.)

– Biennial marine forums to experience sharing amongst coastal management practitioners, and projects and initiatives presently underway were held. (Led by World Conservation Union [IUCN].)
