Partnership in Integrated Coastal Management in the Pacific

Needs Assessment and Consultative Process

One element of the Coastal Resources Center’s Peace Corps Pacific project was to design and undertake appropriate training and consultation with expert integrated coastal management (ICM) practitioners to help develop the philosophical and methodological underpinnings of the program. This was the initial step in a series of consultations with the relevant local communities, ministries of recipient governments, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs. The initial focus was to develop a mutual understanding of ICM goals, objectives, and key principles within the context of each country’s ICM governance capacity. Following consultations, Peace Corps and each recipient country jointly designed a program/intervention strategy tailored to specific technical assistance needs and other priorities.
