Thailand Coastal Resources Management Project

National Policy Formulation Fostering Provincial Level Plans, Coral Reef and Marine Park Management

In Thailand, the Coastal Resources Center (CRC) worked to help formulate a national coastal management policy that fostered provincial-level plans and promoted coral reef and marine park management. This initiative built upon existing work that had characterized the issues in each of the 23 coastal provinces by examining the overall state of Thailand’s coast and integrating these dispersed efforts into a provincial natural resources planning program. Drawing upon existing data bases that assessed coral reef quality and use in Thailand, a national coral reef management strategy was developed, approved by the national government and funded. As part of this overall initiative, CRC also reflected upon the pilot experiences in Phi Phi and Tarutao, and prepared a strategy outlining necessary legal reforms to Thailand’s National Park Act.
