Ensuring Long-term Viability of Small-scale Mariculture, Hawai'i/US Pacific Islands

Analysis and Development of Economic and Environmental Policy

This component of the Pacific Shrimp project proposed to conduct analysis of the policy and institutional environment in the State of Hawaii and the two Pacific Island nations involved in this initiative. Policy and capacity gaps were identified and recommendations made for development of aquaculture policy that provided adequate incentives for production and trade of aquaculture products. Additionally, recommendations were made for environmentally sustainable development, including guidance on permitting, interorganizational coordination, allowable limits to expansion, importation of exotic species and biosecurity measures.
