Sustainable Development for Shrimp Mariculture and Marinas, Gulf of California

Mariculture Good Practices Capacity Building

The focus of this activity was to initiate early actions of the Bahia Santa Maria Bay management plan in order to advance priority actions, gain experience in working with the aquaculture sector(s), and build a constituency for estuary management. More specifically this included:

  • building an awareness of and a constituency for good practices and their role as “good neighbor policies” to reduce environmental impacts and user conflicts
  • characterizing the shrimp mariculture industry practices within the Santa Maria Bay and verifying the key issues as they relate to an overall influence within estuary management
  • implementing a program of good practices to support implementation within the Santa Maria Bay Estuary Management Program
