In 2004 demonstration ponds for fish farming were constructed at Mapinga village, generating much interest. Therefore, Bagamoyo district has decided to use an Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) strategy to introduce a zoning system that will establish permitting procedures for estuary and mangrove areas for pond mariculture.

read moreThe Pwani Project in Tanzania initiated an effort in 2010 to help local leaders and government to assess climate change impacts and find ways to adapt to current and future impacts in a strategic way using their own resources and knowledge. This document summarizes vulnerability assessments prepared for two coastal, rural villages in Bagamoyo District – the historic Mlingotini area and the rural agricultural community of Kitonga. It concludes that by using appropriate participatory exercises and local knowledge it is possible to conduct a vulnerability assessment and identify response options in a way that will be embraced and implemented by community members, and is relatively low in cost to conduct.
