Fisheries provide the world with important revenues and a critical source of animal protein—both of which are particularly important to the poorer segments of coastal societies. In the past, the world's oceans were believed to offer an unlimited supply of seafood. We now know the reality is otherwise. Too many people harvesting a rapidly diminishing supply of living aquatic resources while using increasingly efficient harvest technologies has created a serious food security problem in many countries. CRC has a long history of working with communities of artisinal fishers and in negotiating conflicts between fishers and other users of the coast and nearshore water.
