SUCCESS

The Sustainable Coastal Communities and Ecosystems (SUCCESS) Program is a five year initiative of the Coastal Resources Center at the University of Rhode Island implemented in Partnership with the University of Hawaii. It is supported through a "Leader with Associates" (LWA) Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and is one of two components of the USAID Integrated Management of Coastal and Freshwater Systems Program (IMCAFS).

SUCCESS emphasizes a participatory, issue-driven and results-oriented process that integrates across the topics of coastal management, fisheries, and aquaculture. USAID Missions and Bureaus that join with CRC and its partners to design, implement and/or evaluate these types of activities are Program Associates. Other partners for implementation include international environmental groups such as: World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, and The Nature Conservancy; regional organizations such as the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association/WIOMSA and EcoCostas in Latin America; and the U.S. Sea Grant Network of Universities. The Program’s overarching goal is to help coastal communities improve both their quality of life (health, income, education) and their physical environment through good governance. This is a global program implemented in selected regions and countries with an emphasis in East Africa and Latin America. There are four main components to this program: Increasing Capacity through Training and Certification Programs, Establishing Regional Learning Networks, Achieving Tangible On-the-Ground Results, and Applying Science to Management and Good Governance.
