Science for Governance

Competent management of complex ecosystems and their intensive human use cannot occur is the absence of science. Yet access to relevant science and technology is often unequal, and in many regions a distant dream. To bridge this gulf, CRC links the multidisciplinary community of social and natural scientists at the University of Rhode Island with teams working to address coastal management issues worldwide. Together we increase the understanding of the relationships between human activities and the condition of the coastal environment and its resources. We apply methods for monitoring societal and ecosystem change at various spatial scales. Equally important, CRC assesses the implications of the trends revealing by this monitoring and identify the change that will be needed to achieve the desired outcomes in specific locales, regions or the planet.
