Incorporating Science

Decision-making based on the use of reliable information and the best science is a fundamental tenant of CRC. Competent management of complex ecosystems and their intensive human use cannot occur in the absence of science. CRC links the multidisciplinary community of social and natural scientists at the University of Rhode Island with teams worldwide working to address coastal management issues, transfer new technologies and improve the systems of governance. At the same time, CRC recognizes science and research as only one leg—albeit an important leg—of the three-legged stool that supports effective coastal stewardship. Without education and extension, the stool will not stand. CRC therefore promotes decision-making where managers and scientists work together and where products are designed to be applied within a community through the help of extension services.
