Thailand Coastal Resources Management Project

Phuket Action Planning and Implementation

In Thailand, the Coastal Resources Center conducted an issue analysis that led to preparing an integrated management strategy for Phuket Island, with a focus on the western coast. The three issues featured in the strategy are coral reef management, water quality, and land use planning. Both local and central governments were involved and an emphasis was put on public education and on working with the private sector. This was linked to early actions on-the-ground with several projects beginning before the strategy was completed. Examples of such actions included:

  • installing mooring bouys to prevent anchor damage
  • establishing school and visitor education programs
  • providing guide training

Technical support was also provided to plan the expansion of wastewater treatment facilities and improve daily operations. A solid waste management system was improved in Patong Beach. All of the above-cited experience was part of a larger effort used to highlight the national reforms needed to make local integrated coastal management possible and effective.
