Managing Marine Ecosystems

In support of the government of Senegal’s policy of conservation of marine habitat and fishery resources, the project will work at both the local and national levels to strengthen the system of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). At the national level, efforts will be directed at the successful adoption and implementation of the new MPA strategy. At the local level, the goal will be to enhance the effectiveness and management capacity for three or more selected existing MPAs (e.g. Cayar, Joal and Bamboung). A needs assessment for specified MPA locations will be used to define priority actions that may include monitoring and surveying to establish baseline conditions, preparing and distributing maps and charts with MPA boundaries and preparing other outreach materials.
