Ensuring Long-term Viability of Small-scale Mariculture, Hawai'i/US Pacific Islands

Development of Best Management Practices (BMPs)

This activity within the Pacific Shrimp project, focused on development of best management practices (BMPs) that reduce risks to producers, optimize production efficiency and protect against environmental impacts. BMPs are one of a number of potential management tools that support sustainable aquaculture development. Establishment and adoption of BMPs is of particular importance for small, family-operated farms in the Pacific where tolerance for risk may be low and where farming is conducted in or near sensitive marine areas. The work built on the experience and lessons learned from recent initiatives in other nations including Tanzania, Central America, Mexico and Indonesia.
