Fostering Marine Conservation in the Western Pacific

Building ICM Capacity in the Western Pacific

The Coastal Resources Center (CRC) worked to help build human capacity for integrated coastal management (ICM) in the Western Pacific in this activity. This included training six ICM counterparts from Fiji and the Philippines at the Center’s month-long, intensive Summer Institute in Coastal Management training program. The experience exposed Western Pacific participants to other ICM professionals and practitioners from around the world and helped to build and strengthen their own regional network. CRC also provided one-on-one mentoring, coaching, and leadership training to each of the participants. A follow-up visit to alumni assessed on-the-ground application of course knowledge and skills. A long-term, capacity-strenghtening strategy established interest in and the groundwork for country-specific and regional training with partner universities.
