About SUCCESS
Launched in 2004, the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Sustainable Coastal Communities and Ecosystems (SUCCESS) Program is helping coastal communities in Latin and Central America and East Africa improve their quality of life and physical environment through good governance. SUCCESS also integrates across cross-cutting themes including gender, health and HIV/AIDS.
The Coastal Resources Center at the University of Rhode Island leads the consortium implementing this Program. The Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center, University of Hawaii is the major sub-recipient. Strategic partners are the Sea Grant Association of Universities; The Nature Conservancy; World Wildlife Fund; and Conservation International. Regional partners include the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association in Zanzibar, Tanzania; the Center for Ecosystem Research, University of Central America in Nicaragua; and EcoCostas, a regionial nongovernmental organization based in Ecuador.
SUCCESS is the coastal waters component of USAID's Global Program for Integrated Management of Coastal and Freshwater Systems (IMCAFS), which also features the Global Water for Sustainability (GLOWS) project. GLOWS is working on issues of clean water, healthy aquatic ecosystems and sustainable water resources management and is implemented by Florida International University.
